Patiently Waiting
A bench that offers more than just seating. A playful, interactive structure that unlocks childhood memories, encourages playfulness and generates curiosity. Public spaces have the opportunity to inspire and engage, offering users a reason to pause and connect with their surroundings. In a city of rush and hast, we wish to create these moments of exploration for all. This design will challenge the conventional approach to public realm infrastructure, blending functionality with creativity.

At one time or another, whether alone or accompanying others, we have all found ourselves in the waiting room of a doctors, dentist or hospital ‘patiently waiting’. The highlight of these sterile and stark spaces has forever been the ‘Beaded Maze’. A rainbow of shapes awaiting their journey along slides, loops and bends. A simple joy for all of those patiently waiting - children and adults alike.
The idea to develop this to human scale stemmed from the desire to create a memorable moment for passers that would resonate with us all. Far too often, we neglect the journey in exchange for a rush to the destination. This bench looks to draw attraction and interest through, nostalgia, vibrancy and joy. The bench will feature both moveable and fixed sections, some to serve as adjustable seating and some to inspire play. The beads are metaphorical of all those who travel through the area, demonstrating that a straight path is often not the most enjoyable. The design has the ability to grow and be added to, with multiple rails intertwining, creating a playground of obstacles, trails and fun in Fitzrovia and beyond.
