The Pleat Garden

Studio This & That played a pivotal role in the design and fabrication of The Pleat Garden, a winning entry for the 2021 Showroom Showcase competition, part of the London Festival of Architecture (LFA). This competition paired emerging architects and designers with leading retail stores, challenging them to create striking shopfront installations exclusively from paper. Studio This & That’s founder collaborated on the project and led the fabrication process, bringing this intricate and innovative concept to life.

The installation, created for VitrA’s showroom, explored the creative potential of paper through pleating and origami-inspired folding techniques. Within KCA’s workshop, various methods of paper manipulation, including etching and perforating, were rigorously tested to determine the most effective approach for creating precise and durable folds. The result was an array of pleated patterns that folded back upon themselves, forming a series of flower-inspired geometries. These elements floated delicately in the showroom space, responding to environmental changes by swaying with the wind and diffusing light through their intricate patterns.

The Pleat Garden harmonized beautifully with VitrA’s Voyage colour palette, offering a dynamic, dual-sided aesthetic that enriched both the interior and exterior views of the showroom. The installation’s abstract yet organic qualities evoked a sense of serenity and elegance, transforming the space into a floating paper garden that captivated visitors.

The success of The Pleat Garden extended beyond the competition. Due to popular demand, Studio This & That designed and distributed “Make Your Own Pleated Garden” kits, enabling others to participate in live virtual workshops. These sessions, organized and led by the founder, provided a hands-on opportunity for participants to learn pleating techniques and create their own paper flowers. This marked the studio’s first venture into virtual event planning, a valuable skill honed during the pandemic.

The Pleat Garden stands as a testament to Studio This & That’s commitment to innovative design, meticulous craftsmanship, and the ability to transform simple materials into extraordinary installations. The project exemplifies the studio’s collaborative spirit and adaptability, leaving a lasting impression as part of the LFA’s public event programme.
