Collaborating with CAST, a collective formed by peers from UEL, Studio This & That’s founder was invited to lead the fabrication of the project. The design addressed the social and spatial challenges of the pandemic, particularly the need for social distancing, through a modular and versatile concept.

Fabrication and Craftsmanship
The founder of Studio This & That spearheaded the transformation of the concept into reality. The fabrication process involved casting robust concrete bases and welding lightweight aluminium poles, which were seamlessly fused into a modular system. This modularity not only simplified transportation and installation but also allowed for reconfiguration, ensuring the seating could adapt to various public spaces and future uses.

Design Concept
The Royal Resonance took inspiration from nature to create a harmonious blend of functionality and art. The seating allowed individuals to maintain safe distances while fostering a sense of community. Aluminium poles, designed to vibrate gently in the wind, acted as a playful and meditative feature—both an interactive instrument and a sculptural element. This dual-purpose design encouraged local interactions while promoting mindfulness and a deeper connection with the surrounding riverside environment.

Impact and Legacy
The durable design proved highly successful, remaining in place for over a year and becoming a cherished feature of the site. It was not only practical but also an engaging piece of urban furniture that invited people to connect with each other and the natural world while respecting safety guidelines.

The Royal Resonance exemplifies Studio This & That’s expertise in material experimentation, innovative problem-solving, and a commitment to addressing societal challenges through design. The project stands as a testament to the studio’s ability to bring collaborative visions to life with meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful execution.
